Lest Talk about 'Bad Buddy'

Updated: Dec 28, 2021

Boy love stories are full of the same. If you are veteran in this or a newbie, you'll notice how every series uses the same formula. Be it the engineer students, the enemies-to-lover, homophobic-to-gay, freshmen falls for senior, daddy issues, even those that are more problematic such as incest, victim of rape falls "in love" with rapists, blackmail, etc.

Not to say "straight" series do count with the same aspects sometimes, I mean, you just have to watch series from the past or even now. However, if you are reader first, you can argue with me that boy love stories are made for an specific audience, not the general audience and therefore, we shouldn't complaint because (I don't know, I am not in that side, I would never defend any of those problematic behaviors). I mean, someone argued with me a couple of months ago because "I" came to ruin the real boy love stories. As if I am the writer...

Anyway, speaking of Bad Buddy, I noticed is actually the same, lets see.

  • Enemies to lovers, check.

  • engineer students, check.

  • Freshmen falls for senior, kind of check.

  • Daddy issues, check, even more than that, family.

Even friends, no we are in episode 9 of Bad buddy, and friends are actually different here. I'll get to that in a bit.

Stay with me!

Let's start with the basic, no "Bad Buddy" is not "basic" or the same as every other boy love. It has the same formula, but well developed. Argue with the wall.

First, the chemistry between Ohm and Nanon is palpable, you can not say this series does not make you blush every five minutes. However, this is because of the well-written script (If you considered that it is only 12 episodes). I have seen many people saying "is all the same, oh we already have a 2gether". Okay, tell me all the times Tine and Sarawat were holding hands? or when they kiss each other on the cheeks in public? even in private (ep.9 of bad buddy is the death of me), and not even 2gether, tell me all the time in other bls you saw all these cute moments? not that is overwhelming, is just that it feels natural.

If you watch a "straight" series, a couple holds hands, kisses in like every single episode, why is it that boy love stories don't do that? and when they do it goes right to sex!!?? Nope. "Bad Buddy" has a lot of development, it feels natural, it just feels normal, as it should. Whenever I watch a bl I don't want to feel like I am watching a murder.

Second, "I am gay". Lovely writer has one of the best scripts this year, I am surprised a lot of people don't like it, but again, I noticed the same people like "Don't Say No" as if it was the best boy love series ever written... Pat saying he doesn't know if he is bisexual in one episode and then saying, maybe I have liked boys all my life, on the next episode *Chef Kisses*. And I say this because, we all know how bls do, "I am not gay, I just like him", and no man, if you like a HIM, you like man, so you are either bisexual, gay, pan, I don't know, you straight isn't the word honeypie. Its incredible how bls still used that same line, "its just him", aside from Lovely Writer, this is the only bl I have seen saying "yes, I am gay".

Third, you guys like to hate for no reason. Bad Buddy is well-acted, directed and written, it is not perfect, but is above average. Another aspect I can say is way different is, friends. I just love how they have bad blood, but they are supportive, mostly Pat's friends and Ink and his sister. It surprised me how different they reacted to Pat and Pran. Ink is such a great character, I am so happy she wasn't written as a toxic female, as bls usually do with "ex-lovers" (although she is not basically an ex-lover).

Now, I know, you probably think, "well, is that all? you did not convinced me of anything" well, let me tell you one more thing.

If you like bls, if you read them before, good for you. But let me ask you, if you are one of those girls or boys who likes the problematic aspects of it, you need to check yourself, again and again. As a gay man, I don't want to see my community being represented as most of these bls do. Yes, they are some who are homophobic but they are just hiding who they really are, yes, there are some who like to blackmail. and other horrific things, but why is it that only bls keep showing this stories, as humorous, or as entertaining? That answer is because you guys keep supporting that type of shows. If you think "Bad buddy" is just a boring series, there is nothing I can do about it, I mean, there are other bls out there, but don't talk about it if you favorite bl is... problematic.

The reason why I decided to write this is because I saw how some people on YouTube and twitter kept coming for this series, while at the same kept defending "Don't say no", "LOVE BY CHANCE!!!", and other series that are not as problematic, but, why? that is not healthy, that is not who we really are, the stereotypes man, no, stop it already! If you are straight, stop telling me how we need to act or be represented in media, if you are LGBTQ+ and still have some of these ideas... yikes.. Bad Buddy is one of the best bls I have seen (regardless of the end). So, the next time you come for bad buddy and talk shit about it, think again about your favorite boy love series... and then you can speak about it.

Amen. I am a middle-aged straight African American woman, who just discovered the BL genre in mid 2021, and after watching way too many BL series within a 6 month period, I truly wondered if I was missing something. The step-brother fixation, the unequal power dynamics in some of the pairings, the clear and frankly fetishism of "who's the bottom/who's the top", based solely on the body type of the actors, how the characters supposedly have sex, but then behave like a bashful virgin, whenever their boyfriend attempts to kiss them, i.e. "TharnType". I just didn't understand the logic behind things, until I watched other BLs, that…

Although I have not seen every boy-love you mentioned, I would like to say, I AGREE WITH YOU. I honestly hate all of the tropes, and the fact that we can name them right away... it tells you something is wrong with the stories. I would like to add to this idea "I can see why certain fans have issues with the shows, that do make attempts to not be the typical BL, because those series, literally point out, what's off about the other BLs, that double-down on what has previously been accepted in the past." I also would say, many other people feel weird or called out whenever they see their non-typical bl because they have come to li…
