This is my year-end ranking of the bls I have seen.
This is something I do on my Tumblr at the end of every year, but last year I caught some fire after my list lol. But I keep it real and that's that. I do a "So bad it deserves a Razzie" and a "So good they deserve an Oscar". I just named them like this now lol.
This year, however, since I haven't seen as many bls as last year, I'll rank them in the same post.
Let the games begin!
Fish Upon the Sky

I am so sorry to one of my followers but... So I started this series because one of my followers recommend it to me, and my impression is just 'yikes'. I do not know why Neo plays an asshole in every series he is in, and not even in the funny way. I am not gonna lie, at first I laughed at some of the jokes and moments, but after some point, I was just disgusted. The writers were all over the place, and there is no way that the actors themselves thought this would be a "great" story to tell. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy some comedy, but this is beyond. It has a lot of disgusting jokes, but ep.5 was the tip of the iceberg for me. Anyways, I finished the whole thing, but yikes. The chemistry between the leads is not that clear because the "cute" moments are over shallow by the disgusting moments, the "funny" reactions. Like, sir, you don't need to give us a "cute" moment with overdramatic reactions. Honestly, I got so mad at some point lol. The acting by the guy who plays Pi, was not really good, not even close, the other guy who plays Mork, he was alright, I can tell he tried his best, but the script lies on unfunny jokes and everything over the top.
Razzie for worst picture. There is a lot to fix and I don't think the dentist would be able to do so.
Grade 2, I mean, I would watch for the lead, Mork.
My Sweet Dear

Oh my sweet dear... this series is not it. I came to the realization that I hate it so much and I have my reasons. First, it is clickbait, you just wanted to release the debut song of your lead actor. Second, there is no chemistry between the actors and the runtime is too short. This is so bad I wanted to throw myself down the stairs. My sweet dear was missing salt, some adobo, and cooked through. PleaseDelete. Grade 3!!! this is not it.
Razzies for everything, but the music, it was actually good (aksjkajs ik ik, the irony).
See You After Quarantine

I want to start by saying "thank you, for the effort, even in the middle of the pandemic". With that being said, I did not like this bl. Not that it was short, it's that I was undercooked. The series is too short, 8 minutes per episode, that's nothing when you are going to develop a series that involved two people who do not know each other and are supposed to fall for each other... The writers did try to give us some cute moments but I did not feel it, not the acting nor the chemistry. The last episode has a little recap of the leads after the quarantine, and that was better than the whole series... Grade 4. Ineligible for any award because of the shortness.
The Tasty Florida

Tasty Florida was missing a little bit of adobo and condiments. this series is just plain, bald, and lacks even the tropes of a bl. It was just too short, too simple, and just too little. It feels like the writers didn't even try to write something cohesive or even cute. The lead was okay, they did a good job in terms of acting, but something was off. This is so bad I actually fell asleep watching one ep. I am not even kidding. But I can tell the actors tried their best, but you work with what you have. Tasty Florida wasn't as tasty as one might think. Disappointed. Grade 5, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but if you happened to watch it, good for you.
Razzie for the worst script, worst screen combo.
Don't Say No

This is when the list starts to get a lil betta. 'Don't say no' is full of what TharnType tropes, not even BL tropes. Mame remade her first story and she thought she fixed it but oh boy, she did not. The acting is terrible, the story is underdeveloped and the overall feeling of it is just off. However, the saving grace of this trainwreck is the secondary couple, I wish we would have seen more of them because they really did a better job. The script was a mess, the direction was okay, the acting was a double mess. Grade 6, if I were to recommend a BL to a beginner, this wouldn't be the one.
Razzie for worst actor Ja Phachara, worst screen combo, worst script,
Oscar for the best supporting actor to James Pongsapak
You Make Me Dance

Alright, you make me go insane. From here on, the mixed feelings start. First, this story could have been better written. It is complicated without being complicated (lol). And I would state my problem with bls (recently), the over-complicated story that is underdeveloped. Why would you wanna through a complicated storyline into a show that is not even 20 minutes long...? whyyyy??? then you get a shallow story because the problem is solved in like -1 seconds. Anyways, this is my main issue with this bl. It is not perfect, nor good, it's average. Grade 7.
Was not nominated
We Best Love

A lot of hype towards this bl in mydramalist, when I asked what to watch next... and it did not live up to my expectations. Honestly, it was so.. average, but not as the others. It had a simple storyline and over-the-top acting. But!, what I liked is, I am not sure, I liked it but I can not point out what it was in specific. I would say there are bits of it that I liked, that's probably why. But otherwise, it is just one more bl. The acting was alright, sometimes too much, but hey... Anyways, Grade 7, I would recommend this to someone, yes, but not in a "THIS IS THE ONE".
Nominated for best picture (controversial). Mix rating in SouvenirTomatoes.
Kieta Hatsukoi

"Don't judge a book by its cover". When I judged this bl based on a teaser I saw on Twitter... I thought "ah this is going to be the same thing, classroom, students, and just that". Well, I decided to give it a try a couple of nights ago and I saw all of the 9 eps that were out, in just one night...There is a lot I liked, they are not enemies, and it's like a love square (?). The story is well written, and the characters are so different from what you would expect. I thought Aoki was going to be a shy guy and he is just so honest and not shy (lol?) and he even tries to hold hands and everything, so different from what I expected. Same with Ida, I thought he would be the frat-popular-asshole guy, and he is not. They have chemistry, funny moments, and are just adorable. I like the acting and direction, my only complaint is the number of episodes and the development. I know the story is not as complicated (say 'You Make Me Dance") but the writing team squeezed a lot in the last 3 eps, if you add two more, it could have been better developed.
Grade: 8.5 I liked it. Oscar nom for Best Actor to Meguro Ren.
Hello Stranger & Hello Stranger: The Movie

So in order to watch a sequel, you gotta watch the first and... Oh my Dios!. I am in love with this little gem. The acting from Jc Alcantara gave me life. I wasn't the only one who was impressed because I saw the comments on YouTube and it was all praises and praises. Well deserved. Now, some parts were a little weird, mostly Tony Labrusca, he was a little off sometimes. The scene that showed his acting chops was - well I won't say because it's a spoiler-. Aside from that, I loved it, the storyline, the acting, the direction, and just everything else. I started crying in one scene, and if you guys decided to watch it, I know you will cry too. Grade 9 for the first.
Oscar nomination for Best Actor Jc Alcantara, Best Short Film and Best Script, Best Soundtrack. (That's for Hello Stranger). Now for the Movie... I also liked it, a lot. HOWEVER!, it tried to include a lot in an hour and 40 minutes. It could have worked better as a part two series of, say 8 episodes. And for that, the movie felt a little heavy yet too light. I really liked some of the dialogue, I mean we often see the "I am not gay, I just like him", but I like how Xavier said "I don't know, Bi? Fluid?" because this is the first time he is feeling something like this, he can not tell right away if he is gay or bisexual. Anyway, the grade for the film is 8.5 or 8.8, it was really nice, again, Alcantara did an amazing job and Labrusca did way better, they made me feel. Oscars nom for best Actor again, Best picture, and best soundtrack (it was so nice).
Love La Serie

I know a lot of you don't probably know about this series, it is a production from Peru, and when I tell you all I cried when I saw the first ep. This is because there is still a lot of stigma around LGBTQ+ in Latin America, and seeing this production just made me feel so many emotions. Anyway, the series is top-notch in its storyline. It touches on HIV, friendship, relationships, coming out, sex, and a lot of other issues. Ep5. that touched my heart. It is a comedy and it really shines a lot, the actors and the script. I really recommend this series. The acting is not top-notch, but the writing is excellent. Grade 8.5. Nom for best Picture, best comedy-musical, best original screenplay.
To my Star

So this Korean bl is one of my favorite by them. This bl is cute and weird, the acting was a little off, but not awkward-off. I liked it, from all of the bls they put out, this is one of my favorites, it is not groundbreaking until the end. That kiss scene really went there, as they should. There's not much to say about it, I think it followed the same tropes of a Thai bl, which was fine, but I hoped something else would happened, until the end though... Should I keep talking about the same thing? lol Anyways, Grade 8.5. It is a good bl, it's actually so popular, I am shocked.
Oscar-nominated for best actor Son Woo Hyun, best script.
Light on Me

Okay, kill me now, I don't care. I know a lot of y'all hate "Light on Me", I am talking to JEGA... Anyway, Light on me was so light, I loved it. This series was longer, well-developed, and just well-acted. I think it the biggest issue was the fact that it there was room for improvement, you know? like something was missing at moments. But like the concept of the series, was so different for me (not enemies to lovers and stuff like that) this was just a weird guy with a dildo who likes the other weird quiet but honest guy, who likes the popular "cant say no" guy because he has to live up to expectations. Wow, I liked it. Grade 9. I hope we get a second season.
Oscar nomination for best actor Kang Yoo Seok, best-supporting actor Go Woo Jin, best script.
Honorable Mentions:
Bad Buddy

By the time this is up in my blog, Bad Buddy is still airing. However, I would like to include this in my honorable mentions because it is that good. I would like to say, this boy's love is different, it has all the tropes but in a more developed, romantic way. The chemistry is all over, the acting is decent enough and most importantly, there hasn't been any weird movement... you guys know how some GMMTV bls do... anyways. This one is different, I can feel it in my bones (I hope akjsksjka). Nanon is doing the Lord's job, Ohm is killing it as well, even the secondary characters are doing amazing sweetie. It is Backaoff's grace, period. Anyway, I will come back to the review of Bad Buddy once the series is over.
Paint with Love

Okay, so this bl? because I am confusion, I am not even confused, I am CONFUSION. I am kinda tripped over this series, it is a bl, but so far is just a buddy-comedy? idk if that's a genre, anyways. Singto is getting way better in acting, Darvid is also good. It is really funny, honestly, and the actors are so good (I am being biased because I have seen them in other series, so I love them). I am looking forward to the rest of this series, if it doesn't end up being the series I hope it is, I would be okay with it because it looks just fine. Now, because of how slow is going (Which is a good thing because I love a well-developed series) I haven't been able to judge the chemistry of the leads so that's that.
A Tale of Thousand Stars

Alright! we got to the juicy. I never thought I would include an Earth series in my list of so good it deserves an Oscar. But here we are. This series is so different, cute, well-acted, it has great chemistry, and is just spectacular. Both leads were so good and the overall feeling of the series is just *chef kisses*. There are a couple of things I would have changed, but guess what, I am not the writer. Anyways, GMMTV really did that with this one. Mix and Earth deserve all the recognition. It was simple yet complex. There's no more to say, I mean I love the fact that it took us out of the classroom. Finally. Grade 9.5.
Oscars nomination for Best Actor Mix Sahaphap, Best Picture
Oscars win for Best Director, Best Production Design.
Lovely Writer

Where do I start? Lovely Writer is absolutely the best bl released this year. From the story to the acting, is just top-notch. Now, the real reason why this bl takes the number one spot is that it took all of the tropes from all of the previous bls, and it criticizes it. And from what I have read out there, you all like the cliché shit. Well, I don't, so. This bl broke stereotypes, from Tum and Tiffy doing the opposite from what their gender has been assigned to (we love to see our kings and queens fighting back what's "normal") to Gene saying "I am gay" and not "I am not gay, I just like him". The story is just so well-written, the cute moments are there, the harsh is there (and it really hits), so let me tell you, if you don't like 'Lovely Writer' something is wrong with you or you liked 'Love by Chance' too much. Grade 10, if I want someone to get into bls, I would definitely recommend 'Lovely Writer'.
Oscars: Best Actor Up Poompat, Best Series, Best OST, Best Supporting Actress Zorzo Natharuetal, Best Makeup, and Hairstyle, Best Picture.
Do you guys agree with me?
What is one bl you did not expect to win a Razziie (lol)?
What is one you did not expect to win an Oscar?
I am so sorry, but this is literally how I am, so, appreciate it lol.
Lovely Writer: annoying main characters, cliché stereotyped secondary characters, token effeminate comic relief characters, unbearable omnipresent sound effects, badly written, amateur level production...need I say more? Maybe they wanted to deal with the bl world but they took the wrong path.Good idea, disastrous execution!
