Review: Rushed, Victor.

Love, Victor tells the story of Victor, a Creekwood student who is exploring his life as a gay adolescent. Today I will be reviewing season 3, which is the final season, so by now most of you should know what Love, Victor is about. In this season we got to explore some of the issues not resolved in season 2 and even more than that.

I was debating on whether I should write one post for the whole show or just for this one season, and I decided to just review this one season. As always, I will be reviewing the writing, the acting, and the production including the direction.

Production: It was great as always. This show has a great production value and direction as well. There are plenty of scenes that are so beautifully shot. There is one scene where Benji and Victor are walking at night and the colors are just amazing, I actually got lost in the overall environment. The wardrobe is great, every character has its own unique (but not too out there) way of dressing. One particular person who stood out this season (wardrobe-wise) was Rahim, and there is a reason why this happens, which I would get into detail in the writing. Pilar as well, her character is growing and also the choices that she makes with her clothing, that was good to see her growing in the past three years (that the show has aired) not just in age but also in her way of dressing (lol). The direction is amazing, there is no denying that, I like whenever they give us long shots, mostly when they all talk to each other, for example, Lucy and Lake talking about their feelings, and such, it gives a more natural tone to the show.

Writing: Okay let's be clear here. I loveeeeeeeeed Love, Simon (Argue with me). And I loved Love, Victor, that is seasons 1 and 2. This season was dragged by the writing team. I do not know what happened but something was really off. There are a lot of problems stated in one episode and resolved in like 10 minutes later, why? What's happening here?. The first and second seasons were 10 episodes each and now it was only 8 episodes. There was no reason for them to include a bunch of issues that were not even going to be resolved as they should. The season felt heavy yet too light, I do have positive comments though so dont stop reading...

My biggest issue with this season is how the writing felt like it was going somewhere, somewhere worth the shot, and it just didn't. There are a lot of characters who have been written badly, for example, Andrew. What is the purpose of Andrew in this show? His only purpose is to help Mia be okay, that is literally it, until the last two episodes when the writers gave him a little boost... and nothing. Rahim, oh my god, #JusticeForRahim. When you watch season 2, you feel like Rahim will play a big part in season 3, and he is just ignored the whole time, and then he ignores Victor, what was the point of all of it? And then, talking about the way he changes, the guy is out to his parents now and he dresses the way he wants, you can see Rahim, not just any other character, he is bold and just different in this season. Rahim got RAHIM, he got Daddy and everything else, a highlight of season 3. Look at this king:

Benji, oh Benji Benji, I dont like the way his character was developed, everything that we saw of him in this season could have been in season 2 (Knowing the fact that we won't get the 4th season, this felt incomplete and shallow as a theme in season 3). Mia, mind you all Mia is not my favorite character and she did not grow on me, she hasn't shown any growth since season 1, sad because her story is so touching and could have been way better than this. Aside from this, I feel like the other characters were... slightly better. I do like Felix, his character has shown growth since season 1 and he still has that charming touch, and Pilar!, is the (big) highlight of this season, you saw Pilar in season one being this girl who found everything annoying, even more so her parents, but now, she is all grown up, making mistakes and realizing things

The parents are also better written, I liked it, they remind me of my parents lol. Even Felix´s mom, I loved how she is pulling herself together BECAUSE SHE ADMITS THAT SHE DID NEED THE PROFESSIONAL HELP. Really good. Lake´s mom is a little more humane in this season, and I looooooved how she admits why she is an asshole and how she is so acceptable, growth! because we saw her for two seasons as the mean girl, and she is just human, and I liked it. Lake, I forgot about her, Lake is fine, her character hasn't changed that much, she likes girls so, #GirlsLikeGirlsLikeBoysDoNothingNew. and the main character Victor. I have a lot of problems with Victor, there is so much that could have been done and... just flat. There is one thing I did like and is the fact that he goes out there, you know? dating apps (not that I encourage you to do so, but I am glad he wasn't written to be just in the Benji orbit until Diego happened). He also gets a big scare, and hear me out yall, this could have been an opportunity for the writers to give us a real-life problem, COMING OUT IS SO SEASON 1!, and no, they didn't, so I am mad at it, and by the fact that he comes back to Benji, he could have ended as Benji's friends and support system, not as a boyfriend, Victo deserves better and Benji as well...

Take for example Pilar, she is taking birth control pills, even though she is not having sex, and if you finished the show (which I hope you did) she gets in trouble for it, but it has a lesson. Victor, on the other hand, got a little scare, and then it was nothing. What I mean is, this season focused so much on Benji and alcoholism that it forgot who the main character was, and not just that, it did not balance itself. You could have added Victor´s STI issue with Benji´s alcoholism, and you get a bomb season, one that touches on many different themes. But no, we just get Benji and his parents trying to fight Victor. My issue with Benji is that too, we focused so much on his problem, that we forgot about everything else. Including Mia´s mom was a mistake, she appears for two seconds, gives a little speech, is an asshole and that is it. She doesn't even tell her dad about it, is not even important, I mean it kinda is because it tells her that her quest to find mommy was in vain but still.

As you can see, my biggest issue is the writing of the characters which is essential because... they are the drivers of the show.

Acting: Well, everybody is fine, they are the same as they were in seasons 1 and 2, I think Isabella Ferreira is the best one in this season, she is juuuuust like my sister, maybe because she plays herself lol. and the parents, wow they did good, I like Ms.Ana Ortiz, she has given us everything since season 1 and I think she should be recognized for it!.

Side thoughts: I do not think this show was supposed to end like this, it felt shallow, short, and just noncohesive. There was a lot of nothing and a lot of something, there is no balance, there are just storylines. Also, why did they cancel one of their best shows? because they decided to premiere on Disney+??? Yeah, I think so, I think the season got cut off and the writers and producers did not have any chance to make a good, worthy show and so we got Love, Victor season 3. I am also curious as to why Nick Robinson did not appear on this season... and then the subtle shade Felix throws at him... sketchy (I'm just kidding y'all). ARGUE WITH ME!!!

Final thoughts: Love, Victor season three was a farewell letter to the actors, not the fans. 7.5 average. A lot more could have been done, and even more so when your two first seasons were so amazing. I hope that if the show can get the opportunity, another streaming platform picks it up. Regardless, Love, Victor, will always be one of my favorite shows, it had everything I needed to have, the religious parents, the coming out, and the exploring, season 3 was just the black sheep, and it's sad because there is no season 4 or 5...

Show as a whole: Love, Victor had its ups and downs but it delivered. The fact that it got stuck in season 3 with the same narrative does not mean the show was bad. So, for that, I give Love, Victor an overall rating of 9 really great, top tier honestly.

As always, you really find nuances in your reviews that make think a bit more than I had previously thought about some subject matters. But, overall a 9 rating? That was generous.I was disappointed to say the least. If it were not for the parents, this show would have been a total drag. Benji went from understanding heart throb boyfriend to some angst alcoholic who was constantly confused. Pushes Victor away but goes on a dating app?? Make up your mind about who this guy is. And, why? Because you gave us ONLY 8 episodes. There was no time to waste.Several missed opportunities to have made this farewell season more important for queer culture. Love Raheim. Needed more of him.…
